As more and more school districts, colleges and universities close to help “flatten the curve” of coronavirus spread, teachers are looking for ways to support students and families remotely. We must be grateful to the many educators, staff and administrators who are working tirelessly to make sure families are getting basic needs met during this time and that staff feel safe and supported, and also to businesses and companies who are making it easier for their employees to stay home with their children. 

To help educators working to support English learners during this time, I’d like to dedicate this blog post to great ideas gathered and found that you can put into action and share with families to utilize at home. I encourage you to share as well! Send us an email at nnetesol@nnetesol.org if you have additional resources or strategies that you think might benefit our membership. We will post a follow up with your additions.

All educators/administrators:

  • Winooski School District in Vermont created COVID-19 information videos in several languages.
  • Make sure families and students have access to online resources, if they do not, consider offline hands-free materials delivery.
  • Create a centralized online space where families & students can access key online resources. Many colleges and universities are already doing this. 
  • Create a Youtube playlist of videos relevant to specific groups of students. You may even consider creating some of your own videos with read alouds or lessons. 
  • Utilize an online meeting platform like Zoom to hold live lessons or conversations (100 people for a basic license).

Young learners:

  • Physical Education & learning
    • GoNoodle at home
    • Do some yoga
    • Heidi songs – sight words and number songs that help students learn vocabulary and spelling with a total physical response approach.
    • Create an obstacle course with chairs, and whatever else is in the house. 


College/adult learners:
